Orbit Baby Product Photography
Orbit Baby stroller and carseats stood out from most other baby products with their firmly functional and minimalist design. As an early employee, I took the responsibility for photographing the first-generation system, continuing with all subsequent Orbit Baby products and accessories until the most recent O2 Jogging Stroller and some special editions released after my departure.
Photographing Orbit Baby products in-house came with many challenges. The size of the products, strict requirements for accuracy and safety, and the huge number of configurations and variations made photography an exercise in patience and strategy. I often built jigs and platforms in the workshop, calculated camera angles and displacements, and used tilt-shift lenses to make the most of our limited office studio.
For the G3 System, I created two master files of all product combinations (side view and 3/4 view), each assembled from about two dozen separate shots and nearly 200 adjustment layers in toggled groups. From each file, you could generate any one of over 1000 product/color combinations while being able to make changes to the underlying products in one place.
Strolling in Style
The Orbit Baby system's distinctive, geometric designs lent itself to dramatic perspectives and compositions.
Size and Scale
I created images for and helped design tradeshow booths between 2007 and 2011. In 2010, I shot a series of "larger-than-life" product images for the booth walls. Printed on 10-foot banners, the images were shot with a medium-format digital camera with tilt-shift lenses to simulate the perspective and impression you would experience walking up to an actual stroller that big.
